Liminoid spaces. German and British seaside resorts in the 19th and 20th centuries

Liminoid spaces are spaces where everyday life dimensions and experiences are transgressed. The paper explores seaside resorts as liminoid spaces and examines different dimensions of liminality: spatial, social and erotic, architecture, bathing and advertising. Examples are taken from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and from German and British seaside resorts, but the liminoid quality of seaside resorts is not limited to these countries and time period.

Wiebke Kolbe is a professor of modern history with research interests in cultural history as well as in social and political and not at least in gender history. Before joining Lund university in March 2012, she worked at the universities of Stockholm, Hamburg and Bielefeld.

Kolbe received most of her academic training in Germany. Her dissertation (Bielefeld university, 1999) was a comparison of Swedish and West German parental politics, 1945 to 2000. In recent years, she focused on tourism history and on European commemoration cultures. She is currently writing a book on German seaside resorts in late 19th and early 20th century and works on a research project about battlefield tourism since WW II. Kolbe is one of four principal investigators in the HERA funded project The European Spa as a Transnational Public Space and Social Metaphor.
