Im Januar diesen Jahres stellte die Stadt Baden-Baden gemeinsam mit weiteren zehn europäischen Kurorten einen Antrag auf Aufnahme in die Weltkulturerbeliste. Das zeigt, wie zentral ihr Kulturerbe für das Selbstverständnis heutiger Kurorte ist. Es ist omnipräsent im Stadtbild, in den Kuranlagen und wird auch für das Marketing ausgiebig genutzt.

In einer Podiumsdiskussion mit internationalen Expertinnen und Experten soll das Thema Kurort und Kulturerbe näher beleuchtet werden.

• Ist Kulturerbe tatsächlich für alle europäischen Kurorte wichtig? 
• Wie steht es mit ungeliebten Teilen der eigenen Geschichte, etwa der sozialistischen Periode in mittel- und osteuropäischen Kurorten? 
• Welche Aspekte des Kulturerbes werden ausgeblendet, welche besonders betont? 
• Was wird überhaupt unter Kulturerbe in Bezug auf Kurorte verstanden? 
• Wie versuchen Kurorte, sich ihr Kulturerbe für heutiges Marketing zunutze zu machen?
• Geht es dabei immer nur um das lokale oder auch um ein gemeinsames europäisches Kulturerbe?

Diese und weitere Fragen diskutieren Lisa Poetschki (Stabsstelle Welterbebewerbung und Stadtgestaltung), Paul Simons (Mitglied des wissenschaftlichen Komitees der Assoziation Europäischer Historischer Thermalorte EHTTA) und Dr. Nataša Urošević (Historikerin und Kurortforscherin an der Universität Pula, Kroatien). In January 2019 Baden-Baden, together with ten other renowned European Spas in seven different countries, submitted an application for UNESCO world heritage status, neatly illustrating the importance of history and cultural heritage for spas and health resorts today. Historical testimonies of the spas’ illustrious past in the form of Grand Hotels, Kurparks or Casinos still dominate their townscapes. And they are used for city-branding and -marketing, regardless of whether they still serve their original purposes or have been refurbished for new uses.

A public panel discussion with international experts will shed a special light on the issue of history and cultural heritage in spas today, and consider question such as:

• To what extend do history and heritage matter for the current developments in contemporary spas across Europe?
• How exactly is this heritage framed geopolitically, i.e. locally, nationally or transnationally, as in the UNESCO initiative?
• Are some historical periods preferred over others, i.e. a ‘golden age’ in the 18^thand 19^thcenturies over the 20^thcentury (which is often perceived to be more problematic in the context of ‘mass politics’, ‘mass production’ or ‘mass consumption’)?
• Which elements of spa life and spa culture are emphasised at the expense of which others? Is there a common understanding of what ‘spa heritage’ actually means?
• How ‘usable’ is the past and the material heritage for the further development of spa towns, and how does it relate to the changing ideas about what health (‘wellness’) and recreation means in the 21^stcentury?

Discussants will be: Lisa Poetschki (Department of World Heritage nomination and Urban design of the City of Baden-Baden), Paul Simons (Scientific Committee of the European Association of Historical Thermal Towns), Dr Nataša Urošević (Juraj Dobrila University, Pula). Chair: Dr Christian Noack (University of Amsterdam).   

The panel is organised as part of the HERA project “The European Spa as a Transnational Public Space and Social Metaphor”, bringing together researchers and practitioners from Britain, Croatia, Germany, The Netherlands, Poland and Sweden.
