In January 2020 the student conference "The European Spa Novel. A Journey in a Fur Sack to Davos and Beyond" takes place at the Peter Szondi Institute of Comparative Literature at Freie Universität Berlin. The conference is part of the seminar "The European Spa Novel" under the supervision of Henrike Schmidt in the winter semester 2019/20.

Introduction

Take a look at Thomas Mann's novel of the century "The Magic Mountain" / "Der Zauberberg" (1924): Hans Castorp plans to stay three weeks in the company of those "up there" when he travels to the Berghof Sanatorium for a visit to the sick. But he acclimatises, and what must come follows: He is sick himself. Castorp ends up spending a whole seven years in Davos, where his feeling for space and time shifts and he increasingly adapts to the regularity of everyday life in the sanatorium. In his fur sack, he succumbs to the "horizontal way of life", where minutes of temperature taking seem like a season, and conversely, the changes of season go by in a flash.

What is it then, that makes places like Davos so fascinating and attractive for literature? Which society is portrayed between the dining room and the rest cure? How real is illness when sickness itself becomes a social ideal? Starting from Mann's "Magic Mountain", we set out on a search for answers, with these questions constantly in our luggage. Various artistic and literary interpretations of the spa theme offer complex aspects and points of investigation, with the spa / sanatorium constantly oscillating between crisis and recreation, science and madness, protest and habit, as well as gossip and crime. This student conference presents the first results of the discussions on these topics. We cordially invite you to attend!

The seminar and the conference are associated with the research project "The European Spa as Transnational Public Space and Social Metaphor", funded by HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area) and the German Ministry of Education and Research BMBF.
